  34.     The success of Loon Magic has been preposterous. When I self-
  35. published this book in 1984, I assumed the first press run of 10,000 
  36. copies would last at least my lifetime. It didn't last four months. It 
  37. quickly became obvious that thousands of people shared my interest 
  38. in loons. Now 60,000 copies later, I look at the proofs of these 
  39. beautiful loon photographs and shake my head in disbelief. How 
  40. could a book about a reclusive black and white bird living only on 
  41. the extreme northern fringe of the United States and in Canada 
  42. attract so many readers? How could a single book build NorthWord 
  43. Press, Inc., now with a broad line of nature titles? The power of loon 
  44. religion: people across the U.S. and Canada love this bird and the 
  45. northwood's region it symbolizes. The success of Loon Magic has 
  46. more to do with quiet evenings on northern lakes than marketing 
  47. strategy. Loons sell Loon Magic. That's something I'll never forget.

  49.     A few non-loons do deserve some credit. Pat Klein worked seven 
  50. days a week for over a year coordinating the design, production and 
  51. marketing to get the book to its first readers. She wanted to help me 
  52. achieve a lifetime goalmwriting a book. Thanks. Jeff Fair, a national 
  53. leader in loon protection, did an excellent job of editing. As the 
  54. Director of New Hampshire's Loon Preservation Committee, Jeff 
  55. continues to be involved with loons on a daily basis. Paul Strong, a 
  56. biologist at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, contributed 
  57. significantly to this current edition, especially with the Status and 
  58. Distribution chapter. He also wrote the beautiful ``A Day in The Life 
  59. of a Loon'' in the Loon Lover's Digest section. Information from 
  60. Martin McNicholl, a biologist from London, Ontario, was very 
  61. important in updating the Canadian section of that chapter.
  62. My thanks as well go to all the photographers whose patient work 
  63. brings loons alive on every page.

  66. home "Stillwoods" provided my base camp for many wonderful days 
  67. of loon watching.
